Picking Vitamin Supplements

What kind

Today more and more people are consuming fast food, processed food, and junk food that has little nutritional value.  Instead of eating fresh fruits and vegetables, we reach for our favorite processed food with our favorite chemical flavoring.

This has created a society where we are not getting enough essential vitamin and minerals.

When choosing a multivitamin, you want to take something that will help your body function, rather than make your body fight it. Lots of chemical based supplements lack vital combinations of nutrients. For example, carrots have more than beta-carotene. There is a prisim of nutrients in that single carrot that work together in ways that to this day are not fully understood.

Isolating and synthetically producing these nutrients, and then taking them in high doses are sometimes hard on the body. And in some instances, the body fights off these doses. So what should I take, here are a few ideas.

100% is Key

It is important to choose a multivitamin supplement that has 100% of the daily value. Start slowly though, because your stomach may become upset. Also choose a high-quality omega-3 fat supplement to take daily. Finally, choose a phytonutrient powder that contains a combination of colorful organic fruits and vegetables.

The importance of phytonutrient supplements are their pigmants have been known to reduce heard disease and cancers. Multivitamins do not provide these. Because most people fall well short of the USDA recommended servings of fruits and vegetables, we are seeing lots of disease.

In addition, most people need essential fats, most of the time high quality fish oil supplements will work for this need.  But beware when buying fish oil.  Fish oil is a highly unstable product and can become rancid once it is exposed to oxygen, light, and heat.  When it has become rancid, it will smell "fishy." Some companies add vitamin E to keep the fish oil from going bad.  If your pills taste "fishy," then you might want to start looking for another company that won't sell you rancid fish oil.

To perform the fish oil test, poke the pill with a needle.  Squeeze a little bit onto your finger and smell it.  If it's fishy smelling, it is rancid.  Throw it away.
