Snowshoe Resort

Snowshoe Mountain is located in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. Being one of the highest elevated counties in the East and set in the middle of the Monongahelia National Forest, the county receives lots of snow! Making it a great place for skiers in the mid-atlantic area to drive to for a ski vacation. When you ski at Snowshoe, you also have access to ski at the smaller Silver Creek Resort, located just a few miles away. Silver Creek was acquired by Snowshoe several years ago and also has lodging available as well. Silver Creek generally has wider trails and is great for beginners. Silver Creek is great for experts too, and is a nice retreat when the weekend crowds get too big. But where should you stay? I will use this hub to explain my observations from skiing many years at the mountain top resort.

The Village

The Village area located at the most central part of the resort is by far the best place to stay. I say this because it is centrally located, within walking distance to food and shops, and is right on the slopes.

It is located at the Snowshoe area. Also, just like many rooms on the mountain, some of them are owned by private parties, and some rooms have more features than others. Check with reservations to get the best room for your family or group.

However, this premium location is also the most expensive place to stay on the mountain. Be ready to shell out premium $$ for these premium location rooms.

My Favorite Locations

Top of the World is another location that is nice for skiing at Snowshoe. It is located on the southern most point of the mountain. There are several buildings and condos available in this part of the mountain. This is probably the second most expensive area to stay.

Silver Creek: Silver Creek is a great place to stay if you have a family. This area features studio, one, two, three and four bedroom options, is the perfect alternative for families. Kids World, the Tubing Park, the Mountaineer Terrain Park and night skiing are some of the on hill activities available at the Silver Creek ski area. Plus, they have night skiing, and your Snowshoe lift ticket includes night skiing at Silver Creek. While visiting, I always liked having dinner and going out around 7:30-8:00 at night to catch a few last runs.

Bus transit time to the Village area is about 10 minutes on average. Just because you're going out, remember to dress warm! My wife and I waited about 10 minutes on a bus at the Village bus stop. That doesn't sound too bad, until you factor in the weather conditions. That evening, it was about -2 and there was a 30 mph wind. In a cold snap, it gets really cold at 4800+ feet.

The Inn at Snowshoe

Mountain Base: The Inn at Snowshoe is located 6 miles from the ski slopes at the Snowshoe main entrance. This is a 2 story hotel that Snowshoe acquired several years ago. It offers all the amenities you need at very reasonable prices. The Inn is afull service hotel with a host of amenities including: Indoor Pool, Jacuzzi and Exercise Room, Arcade, Restaurant and Bar, Full Service Front Desk and Gift Shop.

Keep in mind that there is no bus service from this location to the top of the mountain.

Also, for the last 2 years, the rooms at the Inn come with free breakfast. Usually they have eggs, bacon, sausage, french toast, fruit, and more. All you need to pay is a tip to your server. I always enjoy filling up before heading up the mountain.

This is the most economical property to stay at owned by Intrawest and Snowshoe. A favorite of mine when my buddies and I plan a last minute ski trip.

PS: Through January 1, 2011 you can get a free lift ticket when you buy (4) 12 packs of Coke products from a participating Kroger.   There are a few blackout dates, mostly holidays and christmas break.  Free skiing at Snowshoe!
